Knauf Insulation has launched the Urbanscape Green Roof System that transforms energy-losing roofs into natural green oases, saves energy, reduces the impact of storm water and is great for the environment too.
“Urbanscape is lightweight and easy for anyone to install in just a couple of hours, but the benefits will last for years in the form of lower energy bills and a huge positive contribution to sustainability,” says Jure Šumi, Knauf Insulation’s Business Development Director Green Solutions. “The system is a highly effective insulator and can save up to 25% of the energy used for heating and 75% for cooling.”
Additionally, Urbanscape’s unique innovative mineral fibre substrate reduces stress on sewer systems by storing up to three times more storm water than traditional green roof substrates as well as providing an excellent environment for plant life to flourish.
The system also naturally absorbs vast volumes of CO2 – up to 5kg for every square metre per year – and helps cool buildings through water evaporation. This in turn reduces Urban Heat Island effect, where city buildings are significantly hotter than those in the countryside.
The product is now available the Netherlands and the USA and plans are already underway to roll it out in other European markets to meet rapidly growing demand.
“Green roofs naturally enhance any urban space but equally importantly, Urbanscape requires minimal maintenance because the Sedum plants used don’t need mowing and our unique layer structure provides all drainage and root support requirements,” says Šumi.
Already Urbanscape has been installed on residential buildings in the historic quarter of Amsterdam, in car parks and warehouses in Slovenia, factory plants in Belgium and the Netherlands and some buildings in the US by building owners keen to save energy and make a significant contribution to sustainability.
