KNAUF INSULATION IS AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF ASSESSING PRODUCT PERFORMANCE
We’re committed to providing the market with the information it needs to be able to properly assess the environmental impact of our products/solutions.
In assessing the sustainability of our products, we examine every stage of a product’s life-cycle in minute detail, from cradle to grave, through LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). This information is then processed and published as an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration).
We’re pioneering in product sustainability; this is shown by the fact that we have dramatically cut the time needed to create an EPD through an innovative data collection system and pre-verification of part of the process. Creating an EPD involves highly intensive and wide-ranging data collection, hundreds of calculations and rigorous verification, which used to take up to 6 months. We have reduced the time it takes to process and publish an EPD to as little as three weeks, wherever our innovative data collection process has been implemented. We are leading the industry in providing such precise information. Below is a list of our existing EPDs, with the list continuing to grow.
EPD’S ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS:
- Blowing Wool
- Glass Mineral Wool with ECOSE Technology
- Mineral Plus
- Rock Mineral Wool
- Wood Wool Heraklith
We continually update this list of EPDs, which is a collation of EPDs published on the national databases listed below. We believe each EPD should give the right information for every products listed on the EPD. Our EPDs (with the exception of the French FDES) are published using the unit m³ and is therefore applicable to a number of thicknesses.
If you cannot find the EPD you are looking for, please contact email@example.com
ECO Platform (international)
The objective of ECO Platform is the development of verified environmental information of construction products, in particular type III declarations called Environmental Product Declarations. The added value of EPD under the ECO Platform framework is the possibility to use these declarations in all European but also international markets. ECO Platform EPDs are supported by the most important program operators in Europe and their quality and international acceptance is guaranteed.
French national database of declarations on environmental and health related impacts. EPDs, known as FDES (Fiches de Déclaration Environnementales et Sanitaires des produits de construction), are published here.
Our EPDs are also published on the German database ‘Institut Bauen und Umwelt’ (IBU).
The national database in Spain is the "Declaracion Ambiental de Productos de Construccion" (DAPc).
You can also find our EPDs in the UK database BRE
EFS (Environmental Fact Sheet)
Our EFS – Environmental Fact Sheet – is already available for all our Wood Wool products and we are in the process of making EFS available for other products as well. Focusing on key information, our EFS is only three pages long, compared to common EPDs on the market that can range from six to 30 pages. This is an innovative step that Knauf Insulation has taken to help serve the market with information on green credentials.
Type II declarations
These include declarations of a certain performance. For example, our Glass Mineral Wool boasts up to 82% recycled glass bottles. In the US, our level of recycled content is externally verified through UL Environment, who provides validations for environmental claims.
Recycled content is a good indication of a more sustainable product. But, if you really want to know about product sustainability, we believe that an EPD paints a fuller picture (see above for our EPDs).
Type I declarations: eco-labels
We are certified for some of the major European and local eco-labels; Eurofins, for example, takes into account the most stringent requirements for emissions from products across Europe in their Indoor Air Comfort ‘Gold’ certification scheme. Some other examples of labels that we are certified for include Germany’s Blue Angel and the French product emissions labelling regulation.
However, there are other labels in the market that are created to look impressive but lack the necessary criteria to actually mean anything. In the world of sustainable products, there can be many different shades of green. Some eco-labels provide useful information, but if customers want to know about product sustainability they should ask for an EPD of a particular product and go from there.
